The Shrinked Story
starts with a young woman on a mission, with a taste for Guinness.
It plays out across two very different islands and spans a life filled with the joy and grief of caring for the health and wellbeing of tens of thousands of lives.
It takes place over the course of almost half a century…
and that just gets us to the beginning…
The first steps on the Shrinked Journey were taken 50 years ago in Ireland, when a woman named Patricia made the courageous decision to challenge the establishment and build a career in medicine.
This was a time when just the idea of a woman studying, let alone practicing medicine was enough to raise eyebrows and ire. Through all the barriers put before her she persevered, and pressed forward because she was passionate about helping others, particularly women, and believed that medicine gave her the best chance to make a difference.
Perseverance paid off and Patricia, (by this time Dr Dale) established herself as a general physician, in spite of all the challenges thrown at her and was able to realize her dream. Not being one to rest on her laurels and eager for a new challenge, Patricia made the decision to move to the most isolated city on earth, Perth, Western Australia. So with her young family in tow she moved across the world and worked to establish a medical practice that would serve her new community.
Over the decades, however, the face of disease started to shift. Medical technology and science had progressed, leading to advances that improved people’s health and quality of life. In spite of all these improvements, however, new threats emerged. These threats were slow killers – the food we were eating and the lifestyles we adopted. The consequences were devastating – obesity, diabetes and heart disease were just the tip of the iceberg. For the first time in recent history much of the worlds population faced the very real prospect that if things didn’t change, future generations would have shorter life expectancies and poorer quality of life than their parents and grandparents.
But how to address this? Medical and lay approaches to weight management had a notoriously poor success rate. Where did a physician who was passionate about the health of her patients, their families and the community turn to for support? Well, it turns out when nothing works the way it’s supposed to, the best approach is to find a different way. And so she did.
With the support of her younger daughter, who by now was a Psychologist and doctor in her own right, the Doctors Dale began a journey of research and investigation that sought to understand what actually did work in weight management. This journey would lead to the founding of the Dale Health Clinic and a new approach to weight management that blended medicine, psychology and neuroscience with the most rigorous research in nutrition and exercise science. Over the course of the next several years this approach helped people from all ages and backgrounds, throughout Western Australia and beyond, toward a common goal: To take control of their health, lose the weight that had held them back and ultimately achieve the freedom to live the life they wanted to live.
But there remained a question, how to take these lessons, these successes and make them available to those who still needed support? Who have tried to make sense of all the information and misinformation available without success, yet continue to try and change their weight and their lives?
And that brings us to the beginning.
